Why i‑Probono?
On i‑Probono you can connect directly with projects around the world, providing
assistance to NGOs, charities, social enterprises and other organisations.
i‑Probono enables you to:
- Use your knowledge and resources to work for the public good
- Work with exciting clients tackling a diverse range of issues
- Engage with motivated students and like-minded professionals
- Select projects to suit your time commitment. Work may limit the amount
of time you can dedicate to pro bono projects. By using i‑Probono you can find a
range of projects that fit your time restrictions and that enable you to work remotely
How does i‑Probono work?
Your Profile
The first step is to create a profile. Your profile will contain your areas of expertise/interest,
skills, education, volunteering and employment history. You do not have to list
every job you have held, only the ones that you think are relevant.
Matching
After completing your profile, you are automatically matched with projects that
fit your interests and expertise. You don’t have to keep logging into i‑Probono
to find projects. Every time a project is posted that fits your profile, you will
get an email alert and can decide whether it is of interest to you. You can also
search for projects that are outside your profile (perhaps in a different country).
Connecting
Once you have found a project that you are interested in, you can register your
interest by clicking the ‘Connect’ button located on the project page. Once you
connect, the organisation receives an alert and will see your message and profile.
When the organisation replies, you are connected!
Just as you can see projects that fit your interests, organisations can also see
your profile (more on privacy below). They can connect with you through your profile
page, which triggers an email alert. You will see details of the project and their
message. If it doesn’t interest you or you haven’t got the time, you are under no
obligation to respond. If you are interested then you can send a quick reply and
you are connected. Ultimately you are in control of the communication and engagement
process.
Your privacy
Information that identifies you (your name and place of work) is only visible to
organisations once you connect with them or if you choose to disclose it in your
profile. We will never share your email address or contact information with organisations.
Does i‑Probono cost anything?
No, it is completely free!
Which organisations can access i‑Probono and why do they need my help?
i‑Probono is available to charities, NGOs, advocacy organisations, social enterprises,
non-profits and community groups. In fact, any organisation that is working towards
the public good. We are always interested to hear from you about new organisations
looking for assistance!
Most of the organisations that come to us are vastly under-funded and their resources
are over-stretched. As lawyers you have access to legal tools and skills that can
make a huge difference. All the organisations we have helped so far have been extremely
grateful for the assistance they have received. See some of the testimonials from organisations who have used i‑Probono.
What sort of work would I do?
There is no set way to assist an organisation. You could provide legal advice relating
to the organisation’s operations. Or they might need you to assist the people that
they support.
i‑Probono is not just about legal advice – there are a wide range of ways in which
you can make a real impact.
An organisation might need someone to:
- draft an article for publication
- carry out research on a specific project
- join a campaign for legal reform
- respond to a public enquiry
- or just be a legal friend to point them in the right direction
If you want to contribute, be assured that there is some way an organisation needs
your help. If you haven’t already, sign up to i‑Probono and find out how!
How can pro bono work benefit me?
Working in pro bono is a true value exchange. You will enhance your career development
by making new contacts, practising your legal skills and working in a new and challenging
environment
Not only can it benefit you, but employers are increasingly aware that employees
engaged in pro bono work can strengthen and advance their business too. You may
discover a new passion, learn a new skill or simply gain immense pride in sharing
your hard earned knowledge.
And if you don’t know it yet, pro bono work can be the most rewarding work you will
ever do. Using your skills and knowledge to make an impact for the greater good
is empowering and an invaluable reward.
Whatever your motivation, on i‑Probono you can find a project that’s right for you
and that will help you to get the most out of your pro bono commitment.
What has been accomplished through i‑Probono's network?
Does it matter if I am not an expert?
Organisations will sometimes need an expert in a specific area of law and so yes
they will need a lawyer with specialist knowledge. But there are also instances
where other skills may be required.
As a lawyer you have a broad range of skills. On i‑Probono you can find a number
of opportunities to put these other skills to the test, outside your usual day-to-day
practice.
The key to finding the right opportunity on i‑Probono is commitment and the desire
to give something back to the community!
Will I receive feedback?
All organisations that post projects on i‑Probono are prompted to give feedback.
i‑Probono aims to provide a sustainable service to organisations and that means
making sure they are getting the help they need.
Similarly, you will also be asked to give feedback on the organisation.
Does work through i‑Probono count towards my CPD requirements?
No. This is something we are working on. We will keep you updated with developments.
Does i‑Probono have a privacy policy?
Yes - see our privacy policy here.
Only organisations signed up to i‑Probono can see your profile, and your name and
employment information remain anonymous until you connect with an organisation.
